Speed Up Computer or Laptop
By CiscoPixie
Do you want to speed up your laptop? Or maybe you want to speed up your computer? These useful tips can help restore lost space. Please note this is Windows hub, not a Linux one. Before you start this process, write down how big your hard drive is and how much free space there is. You can do this by clicking Start > My Computer > right clicking on it and selecting properties.
1) Clean out your Recycle Bin. Have you even noticed all the trash in there?! It's time to clean it out. It takes an easy click and poof! More free space. Simply right click on the recycle bin and empty it. But first check to see that nothing has been put there by mistake.
2) Clean out temporary files. This one is an easy thing too. Go to My Computer, right click on the local disk (c:) and select properties. There is a box that says Disk Cleanup. Click it and select all the check boxes and click OK. That should restore some more space.
3) Compress the drive to save space. Again, go to My Computer, right click on the local disk and select properties. Check the box that says compress drive to save space. Please note that this one may take a while and select the option to compress everything.
4)Get rid of hibernation. If you are one of those users who switches on a computer and never uses hibernation, this is for you. Go to Control Panel, select classic view, click on power options. Then click the tab that is titled hibernation and uncheck the box. This will save some more valuable hard drive space.
5) Reduce the size of system restore. System restore comes into play when you install new hardware, applications or simply want to put a marker in place in case you need to restore your computer. This is something that takes up a lot of space and most of the time is not needed if you have another back up of your computer elsewhere that is recent. Go to Control Panel, click system, click the system restore tab and reduce the size allocated to system restore. I generally decrease it right down to 200MB but this is optional. Reduce it to a size you feel is suitable.
6) Virtual memory. This is hard drive space used as extra RAM. On average, it is recommended that the virtual memory be double the size of the RAM currently installed in your computer or laptop. If you don't want to tinker with this setting, feel free. For those who need more space, please note that this is a delicate procedure and screwing up is not an option. Now, this is how you do it. Control panel > system > advanced > then select the option where it mentions virtual memory. You can either manage this amount yourself, you can let the computer decide how much it needs, or if you have more than 1GB of RAM (depending on what you use your computer for), you can select no paging file. I never use a paging file because i feel i have enough RAM. This is entirely a personal choice. Click apply once you have selected your option and restart your computer.
Now if you go to My Computer you should see more free space. I hope this hub has been of great use to you and be sure to check out my other computer related hubs,

I never seem to notice my computers slowing down until they are painstakingly slow! These are some good tips. I always try to keep my recycle bin empty and delete as many unnecessary temp files as possible. I'll also try some of the others.

thanks cool hubs and 777inks!
great hub!
Thanks for this hub. My computer is a little slow and it drives me crazy.
What about cleaning out your prefetch files, my friend that is a computer guy says that I should in addition to the files you listed above clean my prefetch. It this good, bad, or does not really matter?
I personally don't think it's a good idea because boot files that the computer is using for applications and stuff is in that file so i'd say leave it as is. That's my personal opinion about it.
Great info and I'm following your suggestions! Thanks! Best, Sis
I never thought about the hibernation thing. Good tips.
Great ideas. Thank you.
You have given some tips to free up the disk space; it is really good for systems running on low disk space. I personally do not find that freeing up the disk space will improve the performance of a computer; today TB HDD are available and affordable by all. Again, compressing a Drive indeed saves space but need more time to access since the data need to be uncompressed before it can be accessed.
Thank you for sharing idea about Speed Up Computer or Laptop. I have also some idea about Speed Up Computer and I also share it's by hubs.
